to the Fortune Cookie Files

July 21, 2009

It was a simple idea really.

The idea came to me at dinner tonight
to buy a bag of fortune cookies and
each day write about whatever fortune
was in the cookie I opened that day.

It seemed simple.

And yet here I sit waiting for
some inspiration from this -
the very first fortune of the bag;

"You will be showered with good
luck before your next birthday.
"

OK, that sounds great and all -
but come on; what am I supposed
to write about based on that ?!??

Besides, I just had a birthday last month,
and not to sound greedy - but I'd really like
this "good luck" to be showered on me
long before my next birthday rolls around !

So, back to this fortune.
I could cheat and grab another one hoping
it would have a far more insightful message.

But Life doesn't let you do that now does it ?
Nope.
You get the Life you were given,
and that's how the cookie crumbles.

(and yes, that pun was SO intended)

So, back to my lame fortune ;p

In many ways this whole project is a practice
in discipline - in holding myself accountable.
I've wanted to write ever since high school !
And do I ?
Rarely ever.
The one thing I want to do more than anything -
I give the least amount of time and attention to.

Of course, now that I think about it
most people I know devote most of
their time and energy to those things that
are not their real passion and 'burn' in Life.
Most, I said - not all.
And I love talking with people whose days
are filled with the pursuit of happiness;
people who have found fulfilment not simply
in between the cracks of their days -
but in everything they do.

Oh sure - often these people are seen as lucky,
but my theory on luck echoes Benjamin Franklin's;

“ I'm a strong believer in luck.
I find the harder I work, the luckier I get. "

Speaking of luck,
I'll be lucky if I ever finish writing this -
because I have no clear direction, and no plan.

If I had a clear direction and a solid plan, then I
could apply this "hard work" that Franklin talks about
and more than likely be met with... well,
shall I say "showered with good luck"
:)p

So, I think that's what I got out of my first fortune cookie.

If you have a clear direction, vision, or goal
and you add to it a solid plan & take action
I won't have to say "Good luck" to you -
because you will be well on your way to creating it !
