to the Fortune Cookie Files

July 24, 2009

Today's fortune threw me a bit, as it didn't really
seem like a "normal" fortune cookie message.

" This year your highest priority
will be your family. "

A bit uncanny, because this year more than any other,
family has taken the priority position in my day to day
thoughts, attention and endeavors.
I went from being a weekend Dad to a full time father,
and am dealing with events that break the ties that bind.

So in that, I've made many decisions and created changes
that I feel would be in the best interests of my family.
And...
Well, to be honest -
I'm finding that much of what I do and pursue
that is productive toward my long range goals
have come screeching to a serious snail's pace.

I'll bet you weren't expecting that.

I'm also wondering what thoughts you may have
buzzing around in your head about what I said -
and what you think it means.

Simply put, I haven't found a balance between
spending quality time with my son and doing the
things that I know will give him a better future.

And it makes me wonder how other parents do it !

I have approximately 3-4 hours a day to teach,
guide and help my 6 year old son to become the
young man who will eventually raise kids of his own.

That's a HUGE responsibility as well as opportunity.

It's also an opportunity that I feel blessed to have,
because I happen to think my son is pretty amazing.
The fact that he is now in MY hands every day -
that his Life is entrusted to me each day,
well I'm still in awe over the whole reality.

So, for those of you who have had
the priviledge of raising your children;
I hope you're not doing it casually,
but with the intent that you are raising
an amazing and remarkable son or daughter.
