Several years ago a friend gave me a
cassette tape that was a compilation
of mostly country music.
It was meant to be a joke,
because everyone knew I
couldn’t stand country music.

candy bars for the other kids
in class the day they had the
school dance back in grade school.
I left the candy bars on their desks,
and tape recorded the dance while
I hid under a desk – afraid to go into

“SEEK DISCOMFORT”.
In our lifetime, and generations prior, we have
been sold a bill of goods that tells us we ought to
seek comfort, pursue pleasures, and embrace familiarity.
We’ve been conditioned to think that the “Good things in Life”
are to be found within the familiar (Go with what you know!),
what’s comfortable (Easy does it!), and pleasurable
